Review of Kiss Me Deadly (1955) by Augustine H — 27 Mar 2014
Probably the darkest Noir I have seen, which is fitting since the term Film Noir itself means Dark Film. In this classic, Ralph Meeker plays Mike Hammer, a dirty private eye who becomes wrapped up in a dark mystery when the hitchhiker he picks up on a dark road is murdered and he and his car are plunged down a hill.
He survives, but is consumed with having to know why she died and so investigates. He's not your typical hero, as he uses violent means as a way to get the information he needs and what's more, he enjoys it (as you can see by his awesome grin as he intimidates and beats up anyone who gets in his way).
The ending of the film is also all kinds of great, leaving us with a bit of a cliffhanger. What happens next? Let your imagination run wild friends. A great film and a classic Noir. The mysterious box at the center of the story would also go on to inspire the ark in Raiders of The Lost Ark, and the suitcase in Pulp Fiction.
