Review of Kick-Ass (2010) by Chimen T — 21 Mar 2014
A geeky New York City teenager decides to try being a superhero, even though he doesn't have any superpowers. He buys a green wet suit online, adds some trim, and becomes "Kick-Ass", a do-gooder with more enthusiasm than competence.
He gains some notoriety and the attention of a father-daughter team of undercover crime fighters who are seeking revenge on the drug dealer they hold responsible for the death of the father's wife.
Kick-Ass becomes a convenient distraction while Big Daddy and Hit Girl go after the dealer and his gang. Told in a comic-book style with a stylized colour palette and over-the-top action, this comedy-thriller has a distinct, quirky charm.
It's bit disturbing to hear the foul language coming from Hit Girl as she taunts her foes before brutally killing them, but it's too unrealistic to be truly upsetting. There's not much of a message here, but it's a fun ride.
