Certainly doesn't hold a candle to Kurosawa's earlier work with Mifune, or to his later film Ran for that matter. Although the story is very interesting, and Tatsuya Nakadai's acting is impeccable as usual, I don't think the strong emotional attachment or just general structure of Kurosawa's earlier work is present in Kagemusha.
Overall it's a very good film, but one that ultimately doesn't succeed like the films of Kurosawa's glory days do.
