Review of Kagemusha (1980) by John B — 15 Jan 2015
Yeah, it's great. But I never get into epic films! Here I felt like Kurosawa was torn between the historical battle film and a person film about a Emperor's double who get more than he wanted. The battles and clansmen who fight seem weak, vauge, too many of them that don't really serve a purpose.
Seems like there is a lot of background and minor roles that don't fit in the film well, they overwhelm the story and distract the audience from what seems the main point, the double- who I don't feel we really know because he is always acting the emperor and never given a moment by himself.
In fact, we don't even know the emperor because his screen time is too short and formal, so all in all this ends up with very little emotion and mostly just a cool war film with some good acting and lines, nothing more.
