If nothing else, Gods and Monsters is an interesting experiment for Bruce Timm and the DC animation crew. It's an elseworlds tale, taking place in an alternate world where things are quite a bit different.

Despite this, it doesn't really rely on shout-outs to the normal world and how things are different. They're there, but they're not the point of the movie. This does create an interesting predicament in the movie though.

On the one hand, I admire the fact that they go in a bold new direction without relying on references to the DC world we already know, but on the other hand there's no real reason for it to be a Justice League movie.

The world is different enough that they could be entirely new characters and the movie would work just as well, and it distracts from the story at hand. However, the story at hand is still a good one, and I loved seeing this darker take.

This is by far the darkest and most violent entry in the DC Animated canon, and probably one of the most violent DC movies in general. The action sequences are stellar, and the story it's telling is interesting enough, and the questions of the lines between good and evil are intriguing.

It's not the best DC animated feature, but it's a damn good one nonetheless.
