Review of Justice League: Gods and Monsters (2015) by Ian R — 13 Feb 2016
I really enjoyed this film and its re-imagining of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. My favourite is re-imagining Wonder Woman as a member of the New Gods that has abandoned the Fourth World; I found it the most intriguing, surprising, and emotional.
Not that I didn't enjoy Batman's reinvention as a scientist transformed by an experiment, or Superman being adopted by migrant workers instead of the Kent's. In fact, Superman's adjusted origin in this film reminds me of one of my favourite alternate Superman stories, "Red Son".
I thought the flashbacks, which defined these new origins, were the strongest parts of the film. I thought that the "present" story was alright and had potential, but it didn't seem to have the emotional weight that the flashbacks did.
I feel like the "present" didn't pack the fullest punch, but that it did have a good plot. The action in this film was quite good, extra violent to fit the altered tone of the main characters.
Overall, I enjoyed this installment of the DC Universe Original Animated films; I find their original or classicaly based films are much better than their contemporary New 52 adaptations. I would be interested in seeing a little more of these altered characters some day.
