Review of Joshua (2006) by Kristi J — 04 Apr 2008
This is a curious film. It has plenty of production value and great performances, especially from Vera Farmiga, who is someone to watch out for. Despite this, there is the sense that the film is suffering from an identity crises - is it a horror film, a psychological thriller, supernatural thriller, a family drama? It doesn't really fit in anywhere, making a satisfying, consistent interpretation / reading of the film difficult.
It's disappointing because the elements of a strong film are there - great premise, family dynamics, mental illness, the urbanisation of family life (city vs country), career vs family, post-natal depression, cool setting - New York, great actors.
..but somehow these elements just didn't combine to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
