Review of JCVD (2008) by Pia R — 14 Oct 2009
First thing on my mind when I saw this movie was how brutally honest it was about the movie industry and Van Damme's perspective of it. With the bank heist plot, you can tell the director must have been a fan of Tarantino, and the film style shows that he's staying true to French cinema roots.
(Check out movies like "400 Blows" and "The Beast Must Die" to see what I mean.) What amazed me the most was perhaps Van Damme's emotion in the movie, portraying a man who had fallen from grace and is looking for a new beginning.
The monologue he gives near the end feels like he's bearing his soul to the fans who grew up watching his movies. It didn't surprise me that he was capable of doing such a scene, but it amazed me.
That scene remains one of my two favorite scenes in the movie, the other scene being that awesome action scene in the opening credits. Made me want to download that song after I watched that scene 3 or 4 times in one sitting.
:-D.
