Review of Jason and the Argonauts (1963) by Joel M — 11 Sep 2011
The film is highly entertaining with a story full of adventure and monsters created by Ray Harryhausen. The film would be nothing without his stunning special effects that amazed me even nowadays. The moment where Talos turns his head at Hercules was one of the coolest moments I've seen on film.
The acting is only so-so unfortunately but it's easier to not pay as much attention to it when you're sucked into the Greek fantasy world with all the Greek speak, costumes, and gods. The highlight of the film is the climax with Jason battling the army of recently risen skeletons, the special effects were so smooth it didn't even seem like it was stop motion.
The music by Bernard Herrmann compliments the epic battle scenes very well, it's nothing on par with some of his other work but it fits perfectly with this film. All in all the whole experience is satisfying and entertaining.
