Review of Jason and the Argonauts (1963) by Brian S — 31 Aug 2016
Though not quite on par with the other "epics" of its relative time period, this Greek myth brought to life is definitely a unique brand of cinematic entertainment. brilliant effects work from Harryhausen is truly the stand-out of the film.
the characters are mostly pretty bland and cheesy, except for a comic-relief Hercules and some very believable Greek gods. the story is unfortunately condensed into a little over 100 minutes, so it's not nearly as exciting and adventurous as longer, more in-depth films.
the writing is also pretty so-so. I guess the point is, don't watch this film expecting well-rounded, well-crafted moviemaking--but definitely appreciate the early stop-motion awesomeness.
