Review of Jack Goes Boating (2010) by Chance F — 19 Oct 2010
Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debut is a lot like his acting: it has a sharp eye for small details that dig deep. That approach is what helps us get to know this wonderful little love story about Jack (Hoffman), a New York limo driver trying his best to be a ladies man.
His co-worker Clyde (John Ortiz) encourages his wife Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega) to set Jack up on a date with her co-worker, Connie (Amy Ryan, terrific), who has seen her share of heartache. After Connie tells Jack she dreams of a man who loves to go boating and cook for her, Jack begins taking lessons.
Jack Goes Boating is taken from the play of the same name that Hoffman also directed. And the movie continues to stay alert to the nuances of four people through their emotional journeys. It's a wonderfully acted movie, laced with laughs and heartfelt humor.
