Review of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) by Chance F — 16 Oct 2015
"Grow a spine, Solo!" On with the review: Having never seen the original show, I didn't know what to expect, but The Man From U.N.C.L.E was quite enjoyable. The plot isn't new or profound, it's funny, it has a great cast, some cool action, an amazing score, and interesting feel to the film.
The story is very basic and is almost the backdrop instead of the focus which is on the characters and the action. It has some powerful character development which feels more natural than forced. That really helps keep your eyes off the story which is the same old nuclear crisis plot line.
Guy Ritchie also leaves his mark on the film with humor strewn throughout, even in very serious sequences. This may be annoying for some but I found it to be thoroughly enjoyable and different from most spy films.
Part of the humor really stems from Henry Cavill's character, Napoleon Solo, who's over confidence can be funny. However Henry really brings him to life as a very suave human being instead of a cartoon character.
Armie Hammer also has a much better performance than his portrayal of the Lone Ranger and Alicia Vikander (who has been in a lot of movies lately) provides a very strong female lead. Compared to most films this movie's score is very powerful and interesting.
In a few scenes that would usually be silent, Ritchie chose to add music to make it more eerie than directly frightening. Finally, the most interesting part: the feel of the film. It has a very '60s theme to it.
It is almost cheesy on purpose which I believe is the best choice director Guy Ritchie could have made. This makes it somewhat more entertaining than the first Bond film (at least to me.) He also uses very creative camera angles and some cool transitions that I haven't really seen work well in any other movie.
Overall, this is just a fun '60s style spy thriller that is just an enjoyable film to watch and less of a film meant to please critics. OVERALL RATING: 7.8/10.
