Review of Jack Goes Boating (2010) by Raphaël R — 14 Jan 2011
Philip Seymour Hoffman being my favorite actor, I always enter his films with a slight amount of bias, but I found myself bored with this one, until about halfway, when the movie finds its legs, and the interest takes off. The second half of the film is much stronger than the first.
So given the lack of poor set up, I think the ends tie together well, and for Hoffman alone, its worth a looksie, but Holly from The Office (Amy Ryan) does a very good job in an honest and poignant role of rape victim turned cautious love interest of Hoffman's character.
Awkward meets awkward in this cautionary love story. Sweet and emotionally rampant, its touching but doesn't quite have the opening for a stellar review. Just give it some time and try not to fall asleep upon first glance.
