Review of It's a Gift (1923) by Davey M — 21 Mar 2008
W. C. Fields has the most bizarre sense of comedy ever--his wildly original comedic rhythm, his frequent disdain for women, children, animals, and the handicapped, his constant smoking and drinking, his deliciously absurd wordplay (maybe the best verbal comedian ever, with an understanding of the well-turned sentence that puts Mark Twain to shame), and so on, and so on and such the like.
Here he's at the top of his game--one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and if it's like Fields' other work I fully expect it will only get funnier with repeated viewings. Kumqauts.
Dirty rat. Charles LaFong. Roller skates. Mr. Muckle. A baby with screwdrivers and grapes and molasses. Comedic paradise.
