Review of Invictus (2009) by Steve F — 01 Jan 2012
I have come to respect the directing styles of Clint Eastwood. From Unforgiven to Million Dollar Baby to Gran Torino, I appreciate the storytelling with its messages about the human condition. Freeman and Damon once again give stellar performances as Nelson Mandela and Francois Pienaar respectively.
South Africa was at a crossroad in 1995, and rugby seemed, for a moment, to help the country come together as one voice, one nation. My only drawback for this film was that Eastwood decided not have sports dialogue during the rugby games.
It would have been interesting to get a better understand of how the game is played other than you can only move the ball side to side and backwards. I suspect that a good number of Oscar nominations will come down next month for this gem.
