Review of Insidious (2011) by Peter P — 24 May 2015
The first hour was very good. I actually would have been inclined to say this was one of the best ghost/haunted house/possession movies I've seen. However, the second half goes off track.
There are genuine scares and creepy moments in the first half, relying more on atmosphere and mood. Even the demon reminded me a bit of Pazuzu from The Exorcist, relying on minimalist, almost Halloween-cheap makeup which actually worked. Well, it worked when we only saw glimpses of him. The second half when he was all over the place, crawling on walls and dancing around it got stupid and he wasn't scary anymore.
The same can be said for the creepy ghost lady. It was creepy seeing her for just a moment in the opening scene, but the end when she was all over it reminded me more of the Thirteen Ghosts remake than anything scary.
It's kind of a tale of two movies, and while I didn't care at all for the second half, the first hour really is fantastic and was enough for me to give it a higher score and recommendation.
