Review of Infernal Affairs (2002) by Mattias E — 04 Jan 2010
With an ancient and already pretty worn out genre concept, Andrew Lau managed to briefly revive the declining Hong Kong movie industry, before lesser talent hijacked the goods and spawned zillions of Infernal Affairs clones, including an overlong and misguided Scorcese remake.
But the fact remains that due to Infernal Affairs success, HK cinema once more was the shiznit, at least for a minute or two, which makes it pretty much movie of the decade on my list. One should definitely not overlook the local aspect of this picture, which also partly accounts for Scorcese's grand failure.
The bright Hong Kong skyline and the darkness of the triad underworld are simply untranslatable here.
