Review of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) by Mel N — 29 Apr 2017
What were they thinking?. I enjoyed the first film for what it was, a fun popcorn flick. But this sequel was ridiculous. It actually started promising, with humanity joined together in the face of another imminent alien invasion.
After years of preparation humans built a global defense system and harvested alien technology to merge with ours. The moon base was pretty cool (for the little time it lasted). It was when the aliens invaders appeared it all went down to hell.
The filmakers clearly intended to show off a bigger alien ship and the same old characters with their progeny on a second act film on its way to a third film for a intergalactic war. The appearance of Jeff Goldblum's character gave some gravity to this film, but most other characters were dummy or shallow at best, especially Dr.
Okun (that came back to life just because) and (ex)president Whitmore (who came back as a traumatized hero with a death wish).
