During his classic period, Akira Kurosawa was a director who could do no wrong. Though he is best remembered for his sweeping samurai epics and period pieces, "Ikiru" -- one of his few films to have a contemporary setting -- is just as good as anything else he ever made.

It's certainly his most emotionally resonant, and is doubtless one of the most thoughtful, optimistic, and touching ruminations on death and mortality in film history. (The scene near the end where Watanabe sits on the swing in the snow and sings is shatteringly beautiful.
