Review of Ikiru (1952) by Spencer R — 19 Mar 2008
Kurosawa is one of my favorite directors period. He is the ultimate storyteller and the cinematography in his films are superb and his influences are wonderful from John Ford to Shakespeare. I loved Hidden Fortress, The Bad Sleep Well, Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Yojimbi and Ran. When I heard that this was his greatest achievement I was very surprised. The story seems wonderful though and I love Takashi Shimura and Makoto Kobori. I would have seen this by now if I had been able to find it anywhere. I give this five stars just from what I have read about it. This is something I am hunting for as if it were gold...
Now that I have seen this film it is no doubt that I will cherish this film for as long as I live. This movie had a profound impact on me. This movie is just as good as anything else he has done (which are much better than most films already) but so much more as well. A truly beautiful essential film for everyone to see.
