Review of Ikiru (1952) by Andy S — 09 Nov 2017
First off right off the bat, the narrator is great. It was really nice to see a different side of Japanese cinema I've never seen - the 50's. Scenes that took place in the bars and on the streets, made me realize how Westernized things were even back then. Seeing how respectable Japanese culture is, really humbles you. The amount of respect in a bow is admirable.
It's really sad to see how someone just wasted away the years of their life by doing nothing. What's even sadder is that it happens to a lot of people. They get stuck in this little bubble and never break out of it. Like they say in the movie, life is to be lived to the fullest and with joy.
On another note though, the girl from the office that visits him at his house, is really cute and charming.
Brilliant writing, especially towards the second half of the movie. The way it keeps going back and forth telling the story. This movie is 2 and a half hours long but it went by so quickly due to the brilliant writing, the wonderful acting, and the interesting story line.
This movie just proves how fucked up the bureaucratic machine really is and no matter what happens (people dying or whatever), things won't really change. But what does matter is trying to make a difference in the world and helping out people in any way possible. Living your life to the fullest and just trying to be a good person.
Overall, very enlightening film. It can definitely open your eyes to a lot of things. I will definitely watch this one again.
