Review of I, Daniel Blake (2016) by Alison M — 13 Jun 2017
I found this movie crass and heavy-handed. I imagine is it intended to be a caricature of the UK benefits system and while its Kafka-like properties do emerge successfully, the domestic situations the two leads find themselves in are so horrid and so improbable as to appear Pythonesque.
I felt bludgeoned by the director and scriptwriter into having the responses they thought I should have. This film is one of the most unsubtle I have watched, and way short of Loach's usual standard.
It provides no opportunity whatsoever for audiences to react in their own way.
