Review of I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) by Larry H — 30 Jul 2017
Glacially paced exercise in atmosphere that is more concerned with eliciting a certain mood than scaring your pants off. It's held together by a great performance from Ruth Wilson who surely does the best with the little she is given.
Wilson plays up the sense of dread without getting too hammy or melodramatic. As the title suggests the film sure is a Pretty Thing; it's well-shot and toys with depth of field to display detachment.
A slow burn without much payoff but it already spells that out for you within the first half hour, both verbally and visually.
