Review of I Am Love (2010) by Jamie N — 22 Apr 2010
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, 'I Am Love' is a bold film exploring a bourgeoisie family as their lives are torn apart when their mother (Tilda Swinton), and patriarch or the family, embarks on a love affair with one of her son's friends. It's a definite slow-burning film, with a sense of operatic melodrama as the Swinton's character falls deeper in love, almost becoming desperate to achieve what she has always longed for - true love, letting nothing stop her. Swinton's performance is simply unforgettable, a true career-defining, passionate spectacle. The director is a master craftsman at seamlessly blending melodrama with beautiful imagery of Italian scenery, telling a story through mise-en-scene with minimal dialogue, enabling the audience to be swept away by the narrative and out-worldly scenery glistening on-screen. A true cinematic treasure to behold.
A beautifully shot and terrifically acted piece of cinema. Seek it out and indulge yourself in it's alluring charm.
