Review of I Am Love (2010) by Megan O — 18 Jul 2010
Tilda Swinton is amazing. She learned to speak Italian and Russian for her role as a lonely wife and mother in I Am Love (and Italian with a Russian accent, no less) -- two languages that she didn't know prior to filming.
She does an incredible job with the performance, regardless of the language feat. My problems with the film only stem from its style, as the amount of pretension present here is practically laughable.
Slow fades, close ups of flowers accompanied by loud opera music, cinematography for cinematography's sake... all are present, and all are unnecessary. The plot itself is actually tragic and completely realistic in every way, however its realism is trumped by the over-the-top stylistic choices.
The film's story and events actually become clearer and more powerful if considered backwards -- if traced back to the beginning. So although it may seem slow, be assured, it's all very much a part of the larger story.
This is a solid, and interesting, even if mind-numbingly pretentious, film -- but how much opera and insect close-ups can one really take?
