Review of I Am Love (2010) by Manny C — 03 Nov 2010
I'm not sure that any filmmaker will really ever be able to fully capture the artistic beauty and richness of Douglas Sirks, but damn it if Luca Guadagnino's I Am Love doesn't nip at its buds.
Start with Guadagnino's star--the sublimely beautiful and talented Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton, Julia). Swinton plays a Russian expatriate married into an Italian family, dealing with the emotional forces out of her control.
The film is unabashedly melodramatic, sometimes too melodramatic, and is subtitled. But it's magic lies in the power of Swinton's performance, her eyes and face a compendium of nuance. I'm starting to think she's Ingrid Bergman for Generation Y.
