Review of I Am Love (2010) by Pierluigi P — 05 Feb 2011
Why this film received such great reviews is completely and utterly beyond me. "I am Love" is an Italian film that is sorta about a woman who has a ravenous affair with her son's business partner, but really, the film is about nothing. For the first forty-five minutes, nothing happens. And then finally the affair kicks in but by that point, you just don't even really care any more. The film jumps from here to there so much that it just ends up a mess of misdirection.
It is nothing more than a highly stylized but bad Italian soap opera condensed into an unending two hours of nothing. Just plain useless. And the score is one the most grating and misplaced in recent memory.
Oscar-nominated for Costume Design, yes, the clothes in the film are wonderful, and the sex is almost soft-core-porn-like, but really, the most impressive thing is quite simply how amazing Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton speaks Italian.
If only she had done it in a film that wasn't so slow-moving and pointless.
