Review of I Am Love (2010) by Nikolai E — 26 Feb 2011
This film is flat-out, drop-dead gorgeous. From the sensuous, sublime Italian countryside to the handsome, decadent interiors, the camera drinks it all in like a rich, sweet liqueur. No pleasure escapes the filmmaker's avaricious gaze.
The food photography in particular is good enough for a Williams-Sonoma cookbook, and then there's what must rank among the most beautiful love scenes in film history. This movie makes 'Eat Pray Love' (so I'm told) look like '1984.
' The clever subjective editing and camerawork plays right into what I'm sure everyone watching this film was thinking, "I want to be there." It's a perfectly straightforward story with some artful flourishes and a few contrivances, which would be more of a letdown if it weren't tied together with a stunning, pitch-perfect ending that's just incredibly rewarding.
Plug it in and gorge your eyeballs.
