Review of House on Haunted Hill (1959) by Rex E — 29 May 2009
What Iâ??m beginning to realize is that some of these old B-horror films are really disguised detective stories: the uninhibited disdain of the characters for one another, there is an innocent female caught in the middle of the whole mess of adultery, femme fatales, and evil intents, and people who feel it their social and moral duty to get to the bottom of the natural or supernatural.
House on Haunted Hill is actually a very good little story outside of a few unbelievable moments (why a woman fleeing for her life would go off exploring instead of heading to the one safe place in the mansion where others were).
In fact, up until a very disappointing final four minutes, the film offers up some interesting minor turns in the story and some decent scares.
