Review of House of Games (1987) by Max K — 23 Jun 2010
David Mamet's directorial debut, House of Games, is as self-assured as it is entertaining. Twists and turns abound in this cool, taut thriller, and although the quick, choppy, dialogue often seems more fit for the stage than the screen, it brings a quirky energy that adds to the film's tense atmosphere.
The only fault I can find in the film is the final 10 minutes or so, where I felt that the action betrayed the authenticity of the main character. Regardless, House of Games is a slick, fun, and suspenseful crime thriller, and certainly a debut that any director should be proud of.
