Review of Hour of the Wolf (1968) by Steen T — 08 Nov 2007
Imagine what David Lynch would make if he had talent and good taste and you might have this psychological thriller. A painter who lives on a small island with his pregnant wife is haunted by increasingly bizarre visions.
I had a hard time telling what was real and what was delusions but I didn't mind. And it's even more beautifully filmed than Persona; every single shot could be framed and hung on the wall. I'm beginning to suspect that Bergman is the greatest director in cinema history.
And Nykvist is, of course, the greatest cinematographer.
