Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by David K — 25 Jan 2008
An undeniably stylistic achievement, "Hollywoodland" falls way short on the storytelling end of it all. It's starts with a very convincing and enthralling conspiracy setup filled with hardened characters who have to live day to day in the cutthroat world that is 1950's Hollywood.
However, the story quickly starts to lose focus when the parallel storylines overlap one another for no particular reason. When I start to really get interested in the George Reeves drama, it quickly cuts to the Adrian Brody section.
Then visa versa happens. However, the two stories, other than George Reeves, really have nothing in common. I'm not saying that these stories aren't good, they are, but when telling a two-hour long story, it needs to flow seamlessly.
"Hollywoodland" does bring up the point that the film industry is a terrible business. I give the film three stars because after 50 years, has anything REALLY changed?
