Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by Peter B — 06 Sep 2008
This was an enjoyable movie with pretty good writing and excellent acting. Ben Affleck managed to not annoy me too much and Adrien Brody was good as usual. It suffered from what seemed to be some poor editing decision, but they weren't glaring enough to ruin the whole experience. Contrary to many other viewers I wasn't disappointed by the end. I actually thought it was, emotionally speaking, the strongest part of the film. there wasn't a lot of closure, i'll grant them that, but in a movie like this that's a strength not a weakness.
All in all I thought it was a nice exploration of fame and the darkside of hollywood as well as a look at america's sometimes dangerous fascination with superman and other american myths.
