Review of Hillsong: Let Hope Rise (2016) by Skeptic303 — 04 Oct 2016
People are dubbing this movie as not being as preachy as others of its same genre, but I think the opening statements prove the opposite. The first pieces of text after the opening logos state how the film is meant to be "an experience" and the band's announced purpose is to help people connect with God. Yay!
What follows is a movie that's hell-bent on advertising the band's songs and doing very little with the band itself. This has two effects: it creates bland characters and a bland story and plot. The result: boredom!!
This was an overly boring movie with absolutely nothing to say and almost nothing happens. Sure, the band pours their heart and soul into making these songs enjoyable and their effort really pays off, but this movie doesn't even have that level of dignity.
With all that said the songs have better value than the movie, and the movie deserves a seal of disavowal.
