Clint Eastwood stars and directs in this western that combines action and existentialism. Eastwood plays a mystery man who rolls into a small mining town that is currently in dire need of help. Three criminals who were put away by the town several years ago are getting out of prison and coming for revenge against the town.

The problem is that this town is hiding a major secret and the town is filled with men who are all afraid to do anything. Eastwood is then hired by the town to help protect them from these criminals. They make in effect a "deal with the devil" when they give him free reign of the town.

Slowly though the town is realizing that they may have created a hell for themselves by making this deal. The film explores a lot of religious themes and what is morally right for a town. The film is very well done and builds tension extremely well.

A classic for Eastwood fans to watch.
