Review of Herb & Dorothy (2009) by Stella D — 10 Aug 2011
A wonderful documentary about a pair of art lovers who turn their passion into a seminal collection of contemporary art, while living on a modest income (he is a postal worker and she is a librarian) with their cats, fish, and turtles.
They accumulate more than 3500 pieces which are hung, stacked, and stuffed into their one-bedroom New York apartment. My favorite part: They give most of their collection to the National Gallery, which provides them with an annuity as a thank-you.
Instead of using the funds to pay for furniture (which they now have room for since most of the art has been relocated) or travel, or even health care, they buy more art! A charming couple and a charming, inspiring movie.
