Review of Hello, Dolly! (1969) by Kevin R — 31 Mar 2013
In 69, Gene Kelly was still directing musicals in the old fashioned Hollywood style. While at the time the film may have seemed outdated, today we can admire Kelly's audacity at creating an island around him for the sake of taking cinema to a glamorous filmmaking style that it should not have forgotten, although in the end it did.
The story of a matchmaker finding herself a match is also an excellent vehicle for a young Barbra Streisand in one of her most memorable performances as Dolly, wooing the rich but seemingly cold hearted Matthau.
The musical sequence of the title track is simply spectacular.
