Review of Heavenly Creatures (1994) by Keaton B — 11 Aug 2013
As many would know, not only is this Kate Winslet's breakthrough performance, it helped to strip apart the typecasting of the film's director -- Peter Jackson -- as a "splatstick" filmmaker; his earlier works often consisted of darkly funny horror movies that often got its humor in the more gorier parts of the film.
Owing to how intense the film is, its strong visuals, the sympathetic portrayals of the film's antiheroes and star-crossed best friends -- Pauline (Melanie Lynskey) and Juliet (Kate Winslet) -- and the prolific featuring of Mario Lanza's music, this film deserves its honor as among the greatest movies ever made.
