Review of He Loves Me… He Loves Me Not (2002) by Ashley W — 30 Jan 2010
À la folie...pas du tout...He loves me, he loves me not. It all starts with a flower but who knows where it will end...
Angelique (Audrey Tautou) is a woman in-love and she wants nothing more than to be with Loic (Samuel Le Bihan), a married doctor. She is desperate for Loic to leave his pregnant wife and shamelessly flaunts her love for him by sending numerous gifts and letters to his office. She even goes as far as to leave messages on his home answering machine which his wife discovers. His wife leaves him for a short time which gets Angelique's hopes up but after a few events and letdowns...it appears that Loic wants to desperately work things out with his wife. Angelique delves into a state of depression and attempts suicide. At this point, the movie goes back to the beginning and the relationship is shown from Loic's perspective. I will stop here because this is one of those movies that you need to watch and see how events unfold. It's a love story/thriller with an interesting turn of events. The less you know about this movie going into it, the better.
Audrey Tautou does a great job playing an adorable, but yet obsessively in-love, woman. The rest of the cast fits perfectly into their roles and delivered convincing performances as well.
Overall, I believe Director and Writer Laetitia Colombani did a great job with this movie; however, my only complaint is the ending. It seems she had a few different ideas of how she wanted it to end and she threw them all together. It felt a bit rushed and maybe a little overkill with twists and turns. It doesn't make for a bad ending but it could have been done better. Despite this tiny complaint, I feel it's a unique movie with a leading lady that delivers a convincing performance. I say it's definitely worth at least one viewing.
