Review of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) by Jay Z — 11 Jun 2017

Much more nonsensical than Halloween 4, the end result of Halloween 5 is a stupid mess sprinkled with potentially great ideas. Halloween 5 is a pretty big letdown. It wants to be a supernatural horror, similar to Halloween 4, but why? Nothing is even attempted to be explained, even the non-supernatural aspects. Things just happen in this movie and that's it. This movie really couldn't be any worse. There is so much that doesn't even try to make sense. And, somehow, after all that, there is still a few good things about Halloween 5.

Donald Pleasence and Danielle Harris are great, the movie has so many creative scenarios, and there's somehow still, after four movies, an unwavering, thrilling, atmosphere. But, none of that can even come close to make up for the tragedy that is this movie. There are almost no words to accurately describe how bad every other part of this movie is. It's just laughable.

In a more detailed fashion, Halloween 5 has characters that are diverse, which is one of the only good things about it. However, this diversity is sparse, and only within a select few characters, not to mention that some characterization is carried over from Halloween 4, which was much, much better than this movie. Also, there's so many sequences involving Michael that were so clever, but were ultimately wasted due to poor, rushed writing.

Beyond that, the characters don't have any other real-life issues or conflicts within their own lives, besides the big party where they're supposed to all get slaughtered and the fact that their parents are away, just to add to the cliché aspects of the movie. They were made only to be targets for Michael, and it's not even really explained why they're targets in the first place, but one can assume, I guess.
