Review of Halloween (2007) by Aaron O — 08 Feb 2013
Laurie Strode: Was that the boogeyman?
Dr. Samuel Loomis: As a matter of fact... I do believe it was.
3.0.
John Carpenters Halloween is a favourite film of mine, and I remember being excited when I heard it was being remade. When I see a remake I try not too compare it to the original and imagine that it's a completely different film, and if you do that with Rob Zombies Halloween, you'll see that it's not bad at all. What I really liked about the film was the in-depth look at Michael Myers childhood, it was very well done and effectively grim, and quite terrifying. I also liked the new things Zombie brought to the story, like how he made masks and showed Michael and Dr. Loomis's relationship. But after that things just flattened down and became a gory slasher flick, but with a satisfying back story and a heart. I really can't blame people for not liking the film though, you could say it took the film and turned it into a gory mess, and I agree, but I liked it. One thing about Rob Zombie is no matter how gory, messy, grim and disgusting it is, you can really feel that strange labour of love that he put's into his films, which is why he has a huge cult following.
Rob Zombies Halloween isn't for everyone, and the remake was highly unneccesary. It doesn't nearly live up to the standards of John Carpenters masterpiece either, and you can understand why people mightn't like it, but if you look at it as a stand alone film, it's not half bad.
