Review of Gorgeous (1999) by Andreas K — 29 Dec 2007
I am a big fan of Jackies more modern movies. I don't like the old style kung fu movies.
I watched this one on in the UK. I hadn't heard of it before.
It was quite a suprise to me and one of my favourite Jackie movies.
Like any Jackie movie, there are plenty of fight scenes, so in this regard, its like so many of his movies, but if something makes this movie different, its that this is an attempt at a romantic comedy. I must admit, I'd take this anyday over Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. It a fun movie about a Taiwanese girl who finds a message in a bottle and heads off to Hong Kong in search of romance. Shu Qi was likeable, at least to me (probably highly annoying to others) as a somewhat innocent girl who falls for Jackie, a boring, business man who only wears white. He really needs to change if he is ever going to find love.
Not a perfect movie at all, but at least its fun, with a nice message. A good movie and plenty of laughs amidst the action and romance.
