Review of Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) by Alexander M — 28 Jan 2008
I'm a big fan of Godzilla, but of all his movies, this one is the absolute worse. It was painful to sit through. Special effects have never been a strong point of the series, but it almost seemed as if Toho Co. didn't care. The movie had nearly as many gaps and holes in the plot as "Dragon Wars". Boring scenes were broken up with completely ludicrous and confusing animation sequences which made no sense.
Since it was released in '72, the psychodelic culture was still a fresh memory, and for some reason, the producers decided to incorporate that into the movie also. This detracted from the movie as well.
Both Godzilla and Hedora actually LOOKED like two men in rubber suits fighting. No attempt was made to disguise them any more.
Many scenes were of the actors and/or monsters doing nothing, but sitting and waiting, interminably.
Inconsistency? Has there been another movie when Godzilla has flown?
