Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by Kyle G — 23 May 2012
"Intellectual" porn star Sasha Grey, desperate to carve some legitimacy out of her ill-gotten fame, starred in this 2009 art film by Steven Soderbergh to try her hand at a mainstream career. The result is not especially well done, even if Grey were a real actor and not a pretentious, over-ambitious nutcase. Running at a scant 77 minutes, The Girlfriend Experience is arty and experimental and unconventional to a fault, a squat, howling, self-obsessed juggernaut.
It might be acceptable conversation fodder (high-class call girl vs. 2008 presidential election; sexual currency vs. economic currency; relationship turmoil vs. financial meltdown; etc.; etc.), but it doesn't work as a piece of art itself. I'm sure there are many other films with budgets smaller than this one's, but few that wear their micro-budgets so proudly.
