Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by Corey C — 11 Jun 2012
Fascinating as a character study and in its distance; what I thought was turning out to be a pseudo-intellectual film exercise ended up achieving something truly interesting by the film's end, reminiscent somewhat of a less ostentatious Godard.
Much ado has been made of Sasha Grey's acting debut; she's fine, though I wonder if the character's steely facade is a cover for Grey's lack of acting ability. The film itself looks great; give Soderbergh a Red camera and he can shoot anything you'd like in a week, apparently.
I can see this strengthening with repeat viewings, but even at a mere 77 minutes it's something of a commitment, though you will be rewarded if you stick with it.
