Review of Get Carter (1971) by Andy F — 07 Nov 2012
Michael Caine makes everything look cool and easy. I guess after 50 years in the business we all know this.
His coolness is also the thriving asset of Get Carter - it's not enough to carry the whole film though.
Get Carter can thank its last half and hour or so and, of course, Sir Michael, that I gave it a fresh score. For the first ninety minutes however it's a pretty mediocre and dated version of something similar to a modern gangster film that tries too hard to be cool.
The whole film process is coated with patina and the outbreaks of violence (especially towards the end) are nice but don't really fit in the movie at all.
What's left is, yeah, I know I mentioned it already, Michael Caine, doing his thing and playing the cool guy.
As I found out, this was essential to shape Tarantino's and Ritchie's style and there are arguably some similarities but after all. QT and Ritchie make better movies with more style and coherence.
