Review of Gentleman's Agreement (1947) by Aaron B — 22 May 2008
Okay, so this movie's not bad. It kept me interested and I liked the characters- of course, how you can't like Gregory Peck is beyond me. But a movie that places itself firmly against anti-Semitism should have something within it about what it means to be Jewish.
Gregory Peck's character pretends to be a Jew and encounters anti-Semitism without the screenplay ever addressing the Jewish faith. Add to that the very preachy script and the terrible ending, this movie should not have won the Academy Award.
Listen up, Oscar- inspiring monologues and good motives do not a great movie make. That all said, the movie makes for a decent two hours, just nothing to write home about.
