Review of Gentleman's Agreement (1947) by Ian H — 20 Nov 2008
Nice to finally see this controversial movie about every-day racism and anti-Semitism that still feel a little valid today, but perhaps on other people and their religions? Unfortunately, even if this film was full of tension back in the forties, it is hard to really grasp how powerful it was then as it is tame compared to newer films that tackle this subject.
Still if one can put the film in context it's pretty spectacular. Didn't like the romantic triangle of the movie though and somehow it seems to have been made a Hollywood happy ending here just for the sake of making the Anti-sematic audience happy so that our non-Jew didn't run away with a Jew friendly sexy fashion editior, or maybe it's just me being anti-Christian now? How knows? It may be that I felt Celeste Holm stole every scene she was in too:P John Garfield and Dean Stockwell also makes memorable appearances in this movie.
