Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Leonard E — 24 Nov 2013
Talk about a slow starter, but this movie gets steadily better as it goes. You can watch Leo DiCaprio's growth as an actor 4 years removed from Titanic, and Daniel Day Lewis is terrific. The music is to Howard Shore what Superman was to John Williams - the proto-score upon which their more famous works were based.
There's a 'lot' of vaguely LOTR music in this thing. This movie makes me wonder how many epic tales we forget because there are even bigger tales that eclipse them. I'm pretty sure that's what Scorcese was getting at.
Grade B.
