Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Superbat — 16 May 2021
Of the Scorsese movies that I've seen, Gangs of New York is probably the weakest. It's not terrible, but not particularly great either. It's a period piece set in the middle of the 19th century, mainly during the midst of the American Civil War.
The story is centered around Amsterdam Vallon, and his mission to avenge the death of his father at the hands of gangster Bill "the Butcher" Cutting. The storyline is somewhat interesting (especially with the events of the Civil War surrounding it), though it ventures into generic territory at times.
DiCaprio is uninspiring as Vallon, and Cameron Diaz looks out of place for the entirety of the movie. Daniel Day Lewis is by far the best part of this movie. He carries the movie with his stellar performance as Bill Cutting.
Additionally, the mid-1800s setting design is very well done. Though it has several faults, Gangs of New York is still a solid movie.
